Resources for Teachers & Students

The Clayton County Water Authority is a great local resource for teachers and students. Our staff has worked to provide resources and opportunities to expand students’ knowledge both inside the classroom & beyond. We provide educational programs on topics such as conservation, environmental and watershed protection, the water cycle & more!

Our employees also share their knowledge and experience through facility tours and in-school presentations while speaking about environmental careers and other water-related issues.

This page provides details on each of the programs we offer and how we get can engage with students at your school or organization.

CCWA Ambassadors love introducing students to the water industry! Whether you’re looking for a classroom presentation or a touch-a-truck experience, we’ve got you covered! Our Career Day Presentations give students a glimpse at life in the working world and can spark an interest in a water industry career that they had not even considered. Please complete this form to request CCWA staff at your school’s event.

Our guided activities may offer the perfect learning extensions for students. Let us know which standards your students are studying, & we’ll work to create a program for you! We also provide hands on lessons for STEM Days, Science Nights & Summer Camps.

A facility tour is a great way for students, or other groups, to learn more about our innovative treatment processes used and what goes on behind the tap. To schedule a tour of one of our water reclamation facilities or water production plants, please click here to complete our online request form.

Water Reclamation Facility Tours

See how the CCWA uses biology and other treatment processes to clean up wastewater with a tour of the W. B. Casey Water Reclamation Facility in Jonesboro. Tours are available for high school students Tuesdays – Thursdays between 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Groups should be between 10 and 20 people.

Water Production Plant Tours

Learn how clean, safe drinking water is produced for more than 270,000 residents with a tour of the Terry R. Hicks Water Production Complex in Jonesboro. Tours are available Tuesday – Thursday between 8 a.m.— 3 p.m. for students in 4th grade or older. Groups should be between 10 – 35 people.

The Newman Wetlands Center is a nature area dedicated to providing environmental education to community members of all ages. Spend the day with our conservationists and form connections with nature! For more information, visit the Newman Wetlands Center website.

Science Fair Projects

The Clayton County Water Authority provides information and/or assistance to students who are working on water-related science fair projects.

Student Internship and Apprenticeship Program

Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) offers a dynamic Student Internship and Apprenticeship Program designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for high school and college students. This program bridges the gap between classroom education and real-world application, allowing students to gain practical knowledge and skills that align with their academic and career goals.

Students participating in the program will:

  • Engage in structured, meaningful work experiences within various CCWA departments
  • Receive mentorship and guidance from industry professionals
  • Gain exposure to water utility operations and career pathways
  • Potentially earn academic credit through partnerships with accredited schools and universities

Internships and apprenticeships may be paid or unpaid, depending on the position and partnership agreements. Opportunities are available for students’ pursuing studies in fields relevant to CCWA’s operations, and each placement is designed to support learning objectives while ensuring a positive and enriching experience.

The Georgia Association of Water Professionals has created an outreach program called H2Opportunity. The purpose of the H2Opportunity Program is to provide students in the state of Georgia with a renewed understanding of water issues within our state and highlight the benefits of a job in the water industry.
