Behind the Tap Spotlight: Stormwater Green Infrastructure Inspector Mike Strickland

Meet Stormwater Green Infrastructure Inspector Mike Strickland. Mike’s role involves working closely with property owners in Clayton County to educate them on the new Green Infrastructure being implemented on their properties. This type of infrastructure, which includes practices like rain gardens, permeable pavements, and green roofs, is designed to manage stormwater runoff in an environmentally friendly way, reducing pollution and helping to restore natural water cycles. However, many property owners are unfamiliar with the concept and the maintenance it requires, making education a significant part of Mike’s daily responsibilities.

To enhance his ability to effectively communicate with the community, Mike is currently enrolled at Parkland College, working toward his National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) certification. “Green Infrastructure is a new concept, and it can be challenging to help people in the community understand its benefits and care requirements,” Mike explains. He also routinely inspects the county’s Green Infrastructure to ensure compliance with CCWA’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit, which is crucial for maintaining the health of local waterways.

Beyond inspections, Mike serves as the lead Stormwater Public Educator, attending numerous events throughout the year, such as school career days and workshops, to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our water pure and clean. “I enjoy working with the public and helping them understand these new concepts. This is also a new position, and I appreciate the opportunity to shape it from the ground up. My boss, Beth Parmer, has given me the flexibility to mold it in a way that works best,” says Mike.

Mike’s journey with CCWA spans over 12 years, beginning in 2007 as an Equipment Operator in the Stormwater Department. Since then, he has advanced through various roles, including Senior Equipment Operator, Stormwater Management Technician, Stormwater Troubleshooter, and Class 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator, before stepping into his current position.

Outside of work, Mike enjoys spending time outdoors, engaging in activities like fishing, camping, hunting, and traveling. He is also actively involved with the Innovation Team and serves as a lead on CCWA’s Tap on the Go team. #waterprofessional
