Behind the Tap Spotlight: Paralegal Qiana Felder

Meet CCWA’s Paralegal Qiana Felder. Ever wondered what a paralegal does? Think of them as the behind-the-scenes superheroes of the legal world: they handle research, draft documents, and keep cases organized. Unlike lawyers, who take center stage in court and offer legal advice, paralegals ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. At CCWA, Qiana exemplifies this role by managing open records requests to ensure transparency, reviewing contracts with our General Counsel, collaborating with our Risk Manager on internal issues, preparing essential documentation, and participating in key meetings to ensure that everyone follows the proper procedures and laws. As Qiana puts it, “You have to be nosey to work in legal because you are involved in everything.”

Qiana enjoys the unpredictable nature of her work. “Every day is different, which keeps things exciting,” she adds. She especially likes handling Open Records requests and reviewing contracts, as these tasks help protect everyone involved. One challenge Qiana faces is the perception of her role. “People sometimes think that because you work in legal that you might be unapproachable,” she mentions. However, she stresses that her job is not personal.

Outside of work, Qiana is active and engaged in the community. She plays in a women’s kickball league, coaches youth basketball, and mentors young ladies. She adores spending time with her boys (13 and 3) and most importantly traveling. Additionally, she volunteers with the youth at her church, helping to guide and support them in their personal growth and development.

Qiana has been with CCWA for almost a year. Before joining CCWA, she spent over a decade in state government roles, including positions with the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Secretary of State. She also worked for two nonprofits, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Icebox Diamonds, as their Paralegal/Office Manager, as well as for Dekalb County Department of Watershed Management. Originally from Decatur, Georgia, Qiana holds two bachelor’s degrees in political science Pre-Law and Paralegal Legal Studies, along with a paralegal certification and a master’s degree in paralegal studies. Her extensive education has provided her with a solid understanding of legal principles and the practical skills necessary for a successful legal career at CCWA. #waterprofessional
