Babb, Elite Scholars and Adamson Earn Top Awards at 5th Annual Model Water Tower Competition
April 6, 2023 – (Morrow, Georgia) – Students from Babb Middle, Elite Scholars Academy and Adamson Middle earned the top three awards during the Clayton County Water Authority’s (CCWA) 5th annual recent Model Water Tower Competition. The competition provided sixth grade students from 10 local middle schools the to chance to design and build working model water towers.
The purpose of the competition is to provide information to young students on water resource engineering, infrastructure, water treatment and conservation in hope that some will become future water professionals. The mission statement for the competition is: “From Today’s Youth Come Tomorrow’s Leaders – Let’s Lead Some To The Water Profession.”
Sixth grade students at Rex Mill, Babb, Mundy’s Mill, M.D. Roberts, Kendrick, Pointe South, Adamson, Jonesboro, Elite Scholars Academy, and Eddie White Academy had the opportunity to participate in their school’s preliminary competition. Each school then advanced their top towers to the CCWA competition.
The March 15 competition, sponsored by Gas South, Jacobs Engineering, Hazen and Sawyer, Consolidated Pipe and Supply Company, Master Meter and Ferguson Waterworks, featured 28 students who designed and built 17 working water towers. The day of the competition, students took their towers through several test stations (materials, dimensions, and hydraulics), followed by interviews with a three-judge panel. Scoring then determined the top towers. Gas South sponsored Visa gift card prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place while Master Meter sponsored Visa gift card prizes for the superlative awards.
This year’s winning towers include:
- 1st Place: Fatima Castillo – Babb Middle School
