Sixth Grade Students Recognized for Winning Model Water Towers

The Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) Board of Directors recently recognized 6th grade students from several middle schools for their award-winning model water towers designed and built for CCWA’s fourth annual Model Water Tower Competition.

The purpose of the competition is to provide information to young students on water resource engineering, infrastructure, water treatment and conservation in hope that some will become future water professionals. The mission statement for the competition is: “From Today’s Youth Come Tomorrow’s Leaders – Let’s Lead Some To The Water Profession.”

Students from Adamson, Babb, Kendrick, Pointe South and M.D. Roberts, who garnered superlative awards or placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd, were recognized during the board’s June 2 meeting. During the recognitions, students shared their design concept and a few things they learned during the competition.

This year’s competition was open to 6th grade students at Babb, Rex Mill, Mundy’s Mill, M.D. Roberts, Kendrick, Pointe South, Adamson and Morrow middle schools. Each school held a preliminary competition and was allowed up to two towers in the CCWA competition.

CCWA hosted the 2021-2022 Model Water Tower Competition at its Shamrock Community Use Building on April 19. The competition, sponsored by Gas South, Hazen and Sawyer, Jacobs Engineering, Consolidated Pipe and Supply Company, Master Meter and Ferguson Waterworks, featured 21 students who designed and built 15 working water towers. The day of the competition, students took their towers through several test stations (materials, dimensions, and hydraulics), followed by interviews with a three-judge panel. Scoring then determined the top towers. Gas South sponsored Visa gift card prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place while Master Meter sponsored Visa gift card prizes for the superlative awards.

1st Place – $150 gift cards ($300 total) – Tamaria Dixon and Akiil Jarvis (Adamson) – T&A Diversity Tower

2nd Place – $200 gift card – Ashley Nolasco (Babb) – Delicious M&M Tower

3rd Place – $100 gift card – Ruby Payan (Kendrick) – Ruby Tower
