CCWA is at the forefront of public health and takes seriously our responsibility to deliver drinking water to the community. You may have seen stories about ‘forever chemicals’ being found in CCWA’s water. CCWA does not produce these chemicals in our treatment process, as their presence is a result of industrial release and discharges from other sources. Click here to learn more about these chemicals, (known as PFAS) and what we are doing here at CCWA.

May 10, 2021 (Morrow, Georgia) – The Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) Board of Directors on May 6 recognized 6th grade students from Babb, Rex Mill and Mundy’s Mill Middle Schools for their award-winning model water towers designed and built towers for CCWA’s third annual Model Water Tower Competition.

During the virtual board meeting on May 6, students who garnered superlative awards or placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd, were recognized. Each student shared their design concept and a few things they learned while designing, building, and testing the tower.

“It is great to see students’ creativity and learn about their tower concepts. This competition forces students to think outside the box as they design and build working water towers with items they already have at home. We hope learning experiences like these will spark an interest in a future career as a water professional,” says H. Bernard Franks, CCWA General Manager.

“Our school system believes that real world experiences are key to the learning process for our students. By participating in opportunities such as the Model Water Tower Competition, our students are not only creating solutions for real world problems but also developing skills expected by colleges and employers, adds Dr. Morcease J. Beasley, CCPS Superintendent/CEO. “Through amazing partnerships with entities like the Clayton County Water Authority, we know the students of Clayton County are being immersed in beneficial learning experiences that will impact their scholastic choices now and professional endeavors in the future. We are very proud of our students for successfully competing in this instructional opportunity.”

CCWA hosted the 2020-2021 Model Water Tower Competition at its Shamrock Community Use Building on April 21. This year’s competition included 22 students who designed and built 21 working water towers. The day of the competition, students took their towers through several test stations (materials, dimensions, and hydraulics). The following day, they participated in virtual interviews with a three-judge panel. Scoring then determined the top towers. Gas South sponsored the gift card prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place while Master Meter sponsored the gift card prizes for the superlative awards.

The purpose is to provide information to young students on water resource engineering, infrastructure, water treatment and conservation in hope that some will become future water professionals. The mission statement for the competition is: “From Today’s Youth Come Tomorrow’s Leaders – Let’s Lead Some To The Water Profession.”
